What is Circle Dancing?

The circle is probably the oldest known dance formation. It is found in the dances of many cultures, such as African, Eastern European, Irish and American Indian.

Thanks to the efforts of the late Professor Bernhard Wosien of Germany, the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland, and the Circle Dance Network in England, the traditional dances have been collated, including the appropriate music, and taught throughout the world during the last twenty years.

Today there are Circle Dance groups everywhere. In addition to the traditional dances, new ones are being created all the time, and several hundred now exist. Most of the dances are simple, repetitive sequences, easily learnt by children and adults, and allowing the emphasis to be on the whole experience rather than on technique.

Circle Dancing is for participation and enjoyment. It makes a refreshing change from our society’s emphasis on performance and competition.
